Mambo king Perez Prado’s music in 18 + 1 will add a sassy Latin beat while Gustavo Ramirez Sansano’s choreography celebrates the power and heat of music and movement. Award-winning Spanish choreographer Gustavo Ramirez Sansano was named one of the “25 to Watch” by Dance Magazine in 2012. He premiered 18 + 1, representing his 19 years as a choreographer, while artistic director at Chicago’s Luna Negra Dance Theater in 2012. In Sid Smith’s review in the Chicago Tribune, he described the work as “playful, but richly designed…It’s another winner for the talented Sansano, agleam with choreographic surprises, including Latin pop….” Sansano began his dance career in his native Spain as a youth dancing at local festivals, and soon he began designing movement for other young dancers. This early influence, growing up in Spain with music lovers and dancers, is important to his work today. As he sums it up: “Dance and music are the perfect couple, the perfect marriage.”
