This season we’ve celebrated femmes de force (“women of strength”) and the roles they play on stage, behind the scenes, and as central characters in iconic dance works, such as the characters in our season-ending production of GISELLE.

An unforgettable sequence in this Romantic Era classic comes in Act II when the Wilis, a supernatural sisterhood bonded by mutual experience, stand together to defend broken hearts in a display of pure feminine power. The social themes behind the Wilis and their mission still resonate today, almost two centuries after the ballet debuted in 1841.
