I prep and then I go and roll up, but I can’t fully roll up. I only get onto demi pointe. My teacher said its because my arch is weak and she gave me exercises to do, but I don’t get better even when I do them. I can perfectly roll up at barre or in center, but not in pirouettes. I’m also a tad bit scared of going up on pointe and turn which I know is hindering me, but I’ve been overcoming it. I’ve been on pointe for a year and a half.

Hi @medlandw, and welcome to BalletHub!

Pirouettes can be tricky enough on flat, and even more-so when you add in pointe shoes! There of course is the strength aspect, which your teacher seems to have pointed out, but confidence is also very important.

One of the best tricks for pirouettes is to practice doing less than what you are struggling with. So if you are uncomfortable with doubles, try a single and really focus on getting into a good position quickly and maintaining it for the entire turn. If you’re uncomfortable with singles, then try simple releves or half turns wearing your pointe shoes. As you feel more solid in releves or singles, this should help build confidence because you should trust that you are in a proper position for turning, so all there is left to do is turn!

This is tried and true advice, but sometimes dancers don’t like to try low numbers of pirouettes because they are either embarrassed or feel they should be able to turn more. If this is the case, try turning in an empty room when no one is around to help build confidence. Eventually, you will feel more confident to try more.

But that being said, everything in ballet comes from a strong base, so working on the basics only makes sense! The best turners understand the benefits of practicing lower numbers and just plain balances in order to later really turn like a top!

Good luck! Check back in and let us know about your progress!

    Hello dear Medlandw,
I and a teacher and director over many years and helped many students with similar situation. I love everything about ballet, and in particular the “teaching method of classical dance” founded by Agrippina Vaganova (known as the Russian training method). Which is really my passion to share. I have seeing the results since I decided to follow strictly this method.

I love to inspire my students via this method with many verses and quotes during class (including artistry inspirational verses ETC!)

I would suggest that you watch this video on pirouettes

and focus on her feet only! Try slowly to implement the rolling (From deep plie) with the balance – DO NOT use the barre, pull up on your hips and dont PUT FOOT DOWN ONCE YOU raise to demi-pointe – If you can roll up via demi-pointe a few times on ONE FEET (SLOWLY- don’t lift heel until after deep plie) then slowly after complete success on balance via roll up, you will turn! Hope this helps.
