Co-founded in 1944 by the late Mary Day and Lisa Gardiner, The Washington School of Ballet (TWSB) is recognized nationally and internationally for its classical training and dedication to excellence in dance and dance education. The school trains more than 700 students each year at its Northwest Campus studios on Wisconsin Avenue, Northwest and an additional 350 students at its Southeast Campus housed at The Town Hall Education, Arts and Recreation Center (THEARC). The Athenaeum in Alexandria, Virginia, provides a third campus for the school, serving 50 more young students. The Washington School of Ballet curriculum includes pre-ballet, boys’ classes, and a graded program for children through young adulthood, many of whom wish to pursue dance as a career. The school also offers a Professional Training Program that brings together especially talented students from around the world for intensive training under The Washington School of Ballet's renowned faculty. All three campuses share a syllabus, formulated by School Director Kee Juan Han, to ensure the same high caliber training at each location. Both the Northwest and Southeast campuses also offer comprehensive adult programs.

Performing Opportunities

Pre-Ballet I students will have an open observation for immediate family members during the last class in May. Pre-Ballet II and III students will have the opportunity to show their achievements in a class presentation at the end of the school year in our England Studio Theater. Participation is optional.Levels 1-7, along with students from the Professional Training Program (PTP), will present an annual Spring Performance.

Washington Ballet Summer Intensive - Northwest Campus

The Washington School of Ballet's Summer Intensive gives students from around the world the opportunity to study with the school's acclaimed faculty. The Summer Intensive offers a four-week course of study for the Lower Division and a five-week course for Upper Division. During the Intensive, classes are conducted at the Washington School of Ballet’s NW location, Monday through Friday. As a result of this intensive training, students are able to progress rapidly and significantly increase their abilities in a relatively short time. The Lower Division Summer Intensive will be from June 23 to July 18. The Summer Intensive Upper Division will be from June 23 to July 25.
