A rare and must see ballet video of American Ballet Theatre performing Theme and Variations with Gelsey Kirkland and Mikhail Baryshnikov.  This video is said to be the last performance Baryshnikov performed with ABT before leaving for New York City Ballet in 1978.

Theme and Variations is quite easily one of Balanchine’s “top 20” ballets (should such a list exist) and was originally choreographed on American Ballet Theatre and premiered in 1947.  There is not much to say about this video besides that every ballet fan should not go without watching.  As you can expect, Baryshnikov tackles this very technically demanding role with the strength and confidence that made him so famous.  Gelsey Kirkland looks strong in this video and dances the principal role beautifully.  The soloist and corps dancers look strong as you could expect from ABT.
