I just started taking ballet class every monday night at my local dance studio. I have never danced before in my life, but I have always loved ballet and wanted to make dancing my new hobby for the fun of it and fitness. The class is a beginner ballet class. But all the other girls seem to be way better than me. I feel like the teacher goes so fast and when I ask her to repeat it, I still feel lost.

Also, I am SUPER SORE. My legs are KILLING me. And i am never this sore after a work out. Is that normal or is she pushing me too hard? I feel like this is a more advanced class instead of a class for someone without any knowledge of dance. Okay, thank you for your time!

Meg9 if you are doing ballet for the first time then its normal that you will feel behind. And even if it’s a beginner class there will be some girls/boys who you think will be doing better than you but you might be doing better than you think, lots of dancers ( me included) think that they are doing badly but they are doing better than they think. If you are aged from 7 up then the ballet class naturally gets harder but if you work really hard and believe in yourself you can do it!

If you wanna support your dance with stretching or strengthening exercises I highly recommend to also do some yoga! It helps a lot for the sore and to keep the mind focused!

Hey, it is normal to feel sore after ballet class and also you will always feel like you are behind or like there are other ones better then you. If not, you should change the classes and join a more difficult one. Usually you don’t feel that far behind, but when I came into my new ballet school, all the other kids in class were way better then me. I felt lost, but that was the time I learned most. I pushed myself even more, I was paying attention to every little detail and I just HAD to catch up. Your teachers will not expect you to do something perfectly right away, but they will expect you to try hard and to give your very best. That’s when youimprove the most. Good luck and don’t be discouraged !

I’d recommend communicating with your teacher! Tell her that things are a bit to fast for you and is there any way she could give you some easier combinations so you can work more basic technique and improve to the level of the other girls in your class. I’m sure she’ll be cool with it!! As far as muscle pain or aches ballet works different internal muscles then running, lifting, and other exercizes do! Don’t worry you should be fine after a few weeks of classes!! Keep going and doing your best!! Good luck!!
